EMMA TRENTINI - AUTOGRAPH 1908 - HFSID 85685
Rare signature from the Italian soprano while in New York, dated 1908
Signature: "Emma Trentini/at bravo Arista/18,1908 New York", in black ink, 7½x4¾. Soprano Emma Trentini (1878-1959) began her professional opera career at the age of 14 at the Teatro alla Scala, studying there for four years before she began touring. In 1906, Trentini came to the U.S., making her American debut at the Manhattan Opera House. She became an overnight sensation, making minor characters her own with her expressive performances. Some of Trentini's performances include Il Barbiere di Seviglia, Carmen, and Contess d' Hoffman. Composer Claude Debussy particularly liked her performances of his work, seeing her perform in concert as Yniold in Pelléas et Mélisande. Trentini eventually transitioned to comic opera, though her career was at first held back by her difficulty to master the English language. Binding holes on left margin. Left edge creased and notched from biding. Lightly soiled. Typed clipping on bottom left margin. Lightly toned. Slight surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
