EMMETT DALTON
The surviving brother of the Dalton Gang.
Rare Magazine Photograph Mount signed: "Emmett Dalton". In
another hand: "author of/'When the Daltons/Rode'". The ex-outlaw is
depicted signing a copy of his book. Sepia, 3¾x5½ inexpertly matted to 5x7.
Emmett was the only member of the infamous Dalton Brothers' Gang to survive
the 1892 attempt to rob two banks simultaneously in Coffeyville, Kansas. On
October 5, Emmett, his brothers Grattan and Robert and two other outlaws were
recognized by the townspeople, who stopped them with a hail of gunfire.
Emmett, wounded by more than a dozen bullets, was sentenced to life in
prison. Pardoned in 1907 after serving 14 years, Dalton chronicled the gang's
Wild West saga of horse rustling, train robberies and bank robberies in Kansas,
Oklahoma and California in two books, When the Daltons Rode and I Rode
With the Daltons. Light folds, diagonal fold through "Da" of the first
"Dalton". ½-inch vertical tear at upper right edge, just touching his head.
Heavy spreading of ink on book title. Mat is worn at edges. Overall, fine
condition. Matted, not in Gallery of History style. Not reviewed by us for conservation integrity.
"As is" matting purchase.
