NAPOLÉON BONAPARTE
The Emperor signs a manuscript letter requesting information about one of his generals.
Manuscript LS: "Napol" as Emperor, 1 page, 7¼x9. St. Cloud, 1811 April 21.To the Duke of Feltre. In French, not fully translated. The Emperor wishes a "report on General Dauloupverdun who is in the service of Westphalia. Where has he served? Is he a good officer? ..." With a one-line note in French, possibly in Feltre's hand on a 3½x1 slip attached by a straight pin (probably from 1811) at lower left: "the 21 April to M. Provost". HENRI J.G. CLARKE, DUKE OF FELTRE,Napoléon's Minister of War (1807-1814), later served King Louis XVIII as Minister of War. In 1809, Napoléon created the kingdom of Westphalia for his brother, Jérôme Bonaparte. Just 11 days before he wrote this letter, on April 10, 1811, the siege of Figueras began. Figueras, in northeastern Spain, is at the foot of the Pyrenees, about 20 miles from the Mediterranean coast. The siege ended on August 19th with a French victory for Jacques MacDonald, Duke of Tarente, Marshal of France, and the defeat of Spanish General Martinez. The day after this letter, the second siege of Badajoz in western Spain at the Portuguese border began. It ended on May 12th with another French victory for General Phillipon and the defeat of British General William Beresford. Viscount Beresford had reorganized the Portuguese army (of which he was made Marshal) in 1809. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
