ENOCH ARNOLD BENNETT
Small slip of ruled paper signed by the British novelist and literary critic in 1915
Signature: "Arnold Bennett/11-12-15". 3¾x2¼, mounted on 4¼x2¾ card. British novelist and literary critic Bennett (1867-1931, born in Hanley, Staffordshire, Great Britain) began writing while holding down a day job as a solicitor's clerk in London, Great Britain, but turned to writing full time after the publication of his first novel, A Man From the North (1898). Almost all of his most important novels - Anna of the Five Towns (1902), The Old Wives' Tale (1908) and the Clayhanger trilogy (Clayhanger, 1910; Hilda Lessways, 1911; and These Twain, 1916) - are set in the real-life Potteries or "Five Towns", which have since been amalgamated into the city of Stoke-on-Trent. He was also an important critic with an uncanny tendency to pick out important writers of the next generation, including James Joyce, D. H. Lawrence, William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway. Lightly toned and creased. Top and bottom edges of signature are irregular. Paper loss and adhesive residue on verso of card (no show-through). Otherwise in fine condition.
