The 509th Composite Group based on Tinian Island, in the Pacific, in the closing stages of World War II, trained for - and conducted - the only atomic bombardments employed to date in war. The Japanese cities of Hiroshima (Aug. 6, 1945) and Nagasaki (Aug. 9) were the targets. As many as 250,000 Japanese may have died in the raids, half of those on the first day, but Japan surrendered on August 15, avoiding the planned US invasion which was projected to cost even more US and Japanese lives. Top and bottom left corners lightly creased and chipped. Otherwise fine condition. Previously authenticated by PSA/DNA.
