ENOLA GAY CREW: THOMAS W. FEREBEE
The man who released the first atomic bomb over Hiroshima tells a collector he will sign pictures for $5.00 each, saying, "I'm not out to make money, just break even."
Autograph Letter signed: "Tom Ferebee, 1 page, 8½x4. No place, March 26, 1997. To "Dear Jerry", in full: "I don't have a business card, so I signed all the cards, The picture I'm enclosing is like the 8x10 which I am out of, but will have more this week. Also I will have one of the g/c as it was backing onto the pit with this bomb in it, colored ones. The photos of myself were taken prior to my retirement, and should be the same that you say you bought. I'm curious as to who you purchased them from, but I will sign them for $5.00 I'm not out to make money, just break even. Sincerely." Thomas Ferebee (1918-2000) was the bombardier on board the Enola Gay and was responsible for dropping the first atomic bomb, "Little Boy", on Hiroshima, Japan. Ferebee initially trained for a position on the Boston Red Sox, but joined the Army when he didn't make the team. A knee injury put him into flight school instead of Army training. He remained in the Air Force until the 1970s, serving in Korea and retiring as a colonel. He worked as a real estate agent after retirement. The Enola Gay was one of the specially modified B-29 bombers of the 509th Composite Group, the world's first nuclear-capable bombardment unit. Irregularly cropped top edge. Fine condition.
