ENOLA GAY: THOMAS FEREBEE
He signs a pamphlet soliciting contributions for the Wendover A-Bomb memorial.
Pamphlet signed: "Thomas W. Ferebee/Bombardier Enola Gay", 2 pages (front and verso), 4x9. Pamphlet folded into thirds, soliciting contributions for a monument honoring the 509th Composite Group, in West Wendover, Nevada. Thomas Ferebee (1918-2000) flew 60 bombing missions in Europe before being recruited to the 509th Composite Group to be specially trained for the dropping of atomic bombs. As bombardier of the Enola Gay, Ferebee released the atomic bomb which struck Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945. Ferebee remained in the service after World War II, serving mostly with the Strategic Air Command until the early 1970s. Wendover Air Force Base, at the western edge of Utah, was the training site for the 509th and for many other bomber groups during World War II. The monument described in this pamphlet has since been erected, appearing just as pictured in the pamphlet. Fine condition.
