ENOLA GAY CREW: GEORGE R. CARON Autograph Letter Signed: "Sincerely,/George R. Caron", 1 page, 6x9. No place, 1986 July 6. To "Dear Ralph". In full: "I signed the covers [not present] as you requested. I'm sorry to hear that possibly Pappy De Hart passed away. I saw him last back in 1954 when he was living in Amirillo (sic) but we sort of lost touch over the years. I had heard that he was in Lubbock and in 1978 on my way to C.A.F. HQ in Harlingen I tried calling the few De Harts in Lubbock. I only got one answer and they had never heard of him. Then, a few years ago, someone gave me an address for him in Plainview. I wrote but received no answer and the letter wasn't returned. If you ever get any further info on him, I'd like to hear it." George R. "Bob" Caron was the tail gunner on the Enola Gay on its historic mission to drop an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945. Facing the rear of the B-29, he was the first to see the mushroom cloud. Caron had been given a camera at the last moment and snapped a roll of photographs as the mushroom cloud ascended. His photos of the explosion were printed on millions of leaflets that were dropped over Japan the next day. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Fine condition.
