ENOLA GAY CREW: GEORGE R. CARON. Photograph signed: "George R. (Bob) Caron". At lower margin, Caron has written: "Best Wishes, B.C." B/w, 10x8. Crew photograph, picturing among others, Colonel Paul W. Tibbets, Jr., the pilot, Major Thomas W. Ferebee, the bombardier, Captain Theodore J. Van Kirk, the navigator, Lieutenant Jacob Beser, the radar counter measures (RCM) observer, Staff Sergeant GEORGE R. CARON, the tail gunner and Pfc. Richard H. Nelson, the radio operator on the historic flight of the Enola Gay, which lifted off from Tinian Island at 2:45 A.M. on August 6, 1945. George R. "Bob" Caron was the tail gunner on the Enola Gay on its historic mission to drop an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945. Facing the rear of the B-29, he was the first to see the mushroom cloud. Caron had been given a camera at the last moment and snapped a roll of photographs as the mushroom cloud ascended. His photographs of the explosion were printed on millions of leaflets that were dropped over Japan the next day. Caron died in 1995. Minor surface creases and smudges (not evident head on). Fine condition.
