signed this photo in blue ink over a now-famous image of him hanging his head
and waving out of the bomber's window.

With black ink notations in upper left corner and on verso, both in unknown
hand. B/w, 9¾x8 overall with four 4½x3¼ images, one surface. These photos
include three of the Enola Gay - including a famous one, which bears his
signature of Tibbet's hanging his head out of one of the bomber's windows and
waving - and one of nine men, presumably the Enola Gay's crew, posing in
front of an "Operations Office". Tibbets (1915-2007, born in Quincy,
Illinois)was the pilot of the B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay,
named after Tibbets' mother, that dropped the first atomic bomb (nicknamed
"Little Boy") on the city of Hiroshima, Japan on Aug. 6, 1945. The blast,
equivalent to 20,000 tons of TNT, destroyed a four square-mile area, and killing
an estimated 70,000 people. Japan surrendered less than one month later, on
Sept. 2, 1945). Tibbets was a colonel when Hiroshima was destroyed and became a
technical adviser on the United States' nuclear bomb tests. He retired a
brigadier general in 1966 and worked in commercial aviation until 1986. Lightly
toned and bowed. Tape residue on verso. Otherwise in fine
condition.
