This unsigned medallion honors the pilot and his membership in "The Silverplate
Bombers", a code name for the crew who dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima,
Japan. Extremely rare!
Ephemera Unsigned: 1½x1½ inches. On one side: "509th Composite Group/ First Atomic
Bombardment/ 1944-1946". On second side: "B-29 Silverplate/ Enola Gay/ Col. Paul W.
Tibbets". U.S. Army Air Force Colonel PAUL TIBBETS (1915-2007), later an Air Force
general, was responsible for the organization, training, and command of the world's first nuclear
strike force. On the morning of Aug. 6, 1945, Colonel Tibbets piloted the Enola Gay, a
Boeing B-29 Superfortress named after his mother, on its mission to drop the world's first
atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. Fine condition.
