ENOLA GAY CREW: THEODORE J. VAN KIRK The navigator signed this slip of paper and penned a note in blue ink Autograph Note Signed: "T. J. Van Kirk" in blue ink. 6½x2¼. Note in Full: “Thanks for the offer of the check - but I will not accept it. Pls. donate it to your favorite charity”. Theodore J. Van Kirk (1921-2014) began his military career in the Army Air Force Aviation Cadet Program just two months before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He joined the 97th Bomb Group and flew with Paul Tibbets and Tom Ferebee, both of whom would join Van Kirk on the Enola Gay crew. The crew trained in preparation of the Hiroshima, Japan, bombing for over six months before they flew over Hiroshima. Frequently asked if he had any regrets about dropping the atomic bomb, the military veteran has affirmed the decision, noting that the two atomic bombs ended the war and prevented a longer conflict that would have resulted in more lives lost. Van Kirk was the last surviving member of the Enola Gay crew when he passed away in 2014. Irregular cut. Otherwise, fine condition.
