ENOLA GAY CREW: THEODORE J. VAN KIRK
The navigator for the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, signed
this black and white photograph in blue ink
Photograph Signed: "Theodore J. Van Kirk/ Navigator" in blue ink. 8x10, actual image 7½x9½
with a thin white border. Theodore J. Van Kirk (1921-2014) began his military career in
the Army Air Force Aviation Cadet Program just two months before the bombing of Pearl
Harbor. He joined the 97th Bomb Group and flew with Paul Tibbets and Tom Ferebee,
both of whom would join Van Kirk on the Enola Gay crew. The crew trained in
preparation of the Hiroshima, Japan, bombing for over six months before they flew over
Hiroshima. Frequently asked if he had any regrets about dropping the atomic bomb, the
military veteran has affirmed the decision, noting that the two atomic bombs ended the war
and prevented a longer conflict that would have resulted in more lives lost. Van Kirk was the
last surviving member of the Enola Gay crew when he passed away in 2014. Fine
condition.
