Vintage 4½x6½ sepia photograph of the legendary operatic tenor
Photograph signed: "Enrico Caruso/N.Y. 1914", Sepia, 4½x6½, with his name captioned at lower margin. Legendary operatic tenor Enrico Caruso (1873-1921) often appeared in performances at the Royal Opera House in Berlin. Caruso, who began his singing career in 1894 (L' Amico Francesco, Naples), made his Milan La Scala debut in 1900, his London Covent Garden debut in 1902 and his New York Metropolitan Opera debut in 1903 (marking the company's grand opening). During his 17 years with the Met, Caruso sang 36 different roles in 607 performances (public favorites included Rigoletto, Carmen and Aida). From the private collection of Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II, went on to become President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Worn at edges. Slightly creased. 2-inch piece of tape affixed on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
