The great tenor sends a postcard from New York.
Picture Postcard signed: "Caruso/144 E. 37th St./N.Y. City",
5½x3½ postcard. 1-cent Franklin stamp affixed, postmarked New York, New York,
ineligible. Color postcard picturing Governors Island, view from the East
River Bridge. Legendary operatic tenor Enrico Caruso (1873-1921) often
appeared in performances at the Royal Opera House in Berlin. Caruso, who
began his singing career in 1894 (L' Amico Francesco, Naples),
made his Milan La Scala debut in 1900, his London Covent Garden debut in 1902
and his New York Metropolitan Opera debut in 1903 (marking the company's grand
opening). During his 17 years with the Met, Caruso sang 36 different
roles in 607 performances (public favorites included Rigoletto,
Carmenand Aida). Caruso was the first leading
performer to record. Lightly worn at corners and soiled. Otherwise, fine
condition.
