of Albany, New York, 1p, 7¼x10½. Albany, New York, 1969 December 1.
On letterhead of the City of Albany, State of New York, Office of the Mayor to
Mr. Danny Franklin, Sunnyslope, Arizona. In full: "I wish to
acknowledge receipt of your letter of November 26th, and am enclosing an
autographed photograph, as you request. I am sorry to say that there are no
living former Mayors of the City of Albany. Sincerely yours". Enclosure
not present. Erastus Corning II (1909-1983) was the longest-serving Major of
a major American city, serving eleven terms (1941-1983). The
grandson of Erastus Corning, who was Mayor of Albany from 1834-1836, and
the son of Edwin Corning, who was New York's Lieutenant Governor from
1926-1928, Corning had begun his political career in 1936 in the New York
State Assembly. He then was a member of the New York State Senate
from 1937-1941, when he resigned upon becoming Mayor. During Corning's service
in WWII, a city councilman was acting mayor, but Corning served ten full terms
after the war, winning his last re-election in 1980. Lightly creased with folds,
not at signature. Fine condition.
