ERIC SEVAREID
In a postcard to a fan, he deems himself, "a lousy actor."
Typed Note Signed: "Eric Sevareid", 1p, 6x4¼. Washington,
D.C., 1969 January 29. On postcard of CBS News, A Division of Columbia
Broadcasting System, Inc. to Mr. Corliss. In full: "I do appreciate
the implied compliments. I'm about six feet, two inches and slowly shriveling
down. Otherwise I bear no resemblance to Lincoln, physically, morally or
mentally, and am, alas, a lousy actor." After a brief stint as a newspaper
reporter, Eric Sevareid (1912-1992) joined CBS News in Europe before WWII
and spent the rest of his life (1912-1992) in broadcast journalism. Despite his
scholarly image in later years, Sevareid was a swashbuckling war correspondent,
whose exploits included parachuting into the Burmese jungle. National
correspondent on the CBS Evening News (1964-1977), he deplored the
slow surrender of broadcast journalism to popular showmanship. The author of
several books, including Not So Wild a Dream (1946), a study of the
generation that lived though the Depression and WWII, he narrated several TV
documentaries after his official retirement from CBS News. Lightly creased
at corners. Fine condition.
