Typed Sentiment signed: All good wishes from/Eric Coates/March
1935", 4¼x2¾, affixed to a 5½x¼ album leaf.Eric Coates
(1886-1957) gave up his position as first violist with the Queen's Hall
Orchestra (1912-1919) to devote full time to music composition. His specialty
was light, memorable orchestral music, which fit perfectly as radio theme
music. His overture "The Merrymakers" was a success in 1922, but greater
fame accompanied his London Suite (1933), the last movement of which
was used by the BBC for its In Town Tonight. "Calling All Workers"
was the introductory theme for the BBC's Music While You Work during
World War II. "By the Sleepy Lagoon" can be heard on the soundtracks
of such popular films as Annie Hall and Sophie's Choice.
His "Halcyon Days", played at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, also
introduced the popular TV drama The Forsyte Saga (1967). He wrote the
"Dam Busters March" for the popular war movie The Dam Busters (1954).
Coates conducted the orchestra on many recordings of his works. His
autobiography, Suite in Four Movements, was released in 1953. Left edge
frayed from binding. Soiled. Toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
