ERICH LEINSDORF This card embellished with a printed black border is signed by the Austrian conductor Printed Card Signed in Ink: "Erich Leinsdorf". 3x5 card. Erich Leinsdorf (1912-1993) was a Jewish conductor who was born in Vienna. After working under Bruno Walter and Arturo Toscanini from 1934 to 1937, the young recent graduate earned an appointment as assistant conductor at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, New York. Just six months after Leinsdorf left Austria, Adolf Hitler began the process of Anschluss, absorbing Austria into Germany with civilian Austrian support. Leinsdorf earned the right to live in the United States, but was drafted for WWII in 1943, months after he was named Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra. Following the war, he worked for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (1947-1955) and the Boston Symphony Orchestra (1962-1969). While in this latter position, Leinsdorf had the unfortunate duty of informing the crowd that President John F. Kennedy had been assassinated. Following the audience's reaction, the orchestra played the Funeral March from Beethoven's third symphony. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Signature is lightly haloed. Otherwise, fine condition.
