ERLE STANLEY GARDNER. Typed Letter signed: "Erle Stanley Gardner", 1p, 8½x11. Temecula, California, 1969 May 5. On his personal pictorial letterhead to Reverend James M. Harvey, Rector, Church of The Resurrection, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In full: "The 'intrusion upon my privacy' as you call it, is something which happens every day - and instead of being an intrusion I consider it a compliment. Your collection sounds like a workmanlike gathering of the faces of interesting people - and I am happy to send you one of my photographs [not included] to be put with your collection. My best wishes go to you. Sincerely." Best known for creating Perry Mason, the lawyer-detective, who appears in more than 80 of his novels, Gardner (1889-1970) also wrote a series of novels featuring District Attorney Doug Selby and 29 books featuring detective Bertha Cool and legalist Donald Lam (under the pseudonym A.A. Fair). The prolific author, whose books have sold hundreds of millions of copies, also wrote Western novels, science fiction, short stories and articles. Gardner was also creator of the Perry Mason TV series (1957-1966), appearing in one episode as a judge. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
