ERNEST BORGNINE
His handwritten Christmas wish to the family of Hollywood wardrobe specialist Ed Wynigear, from Wynigear's personal collection
Autograph Sentiment Signed: "Merry Xmas/Ernest/Borgnine", 4x2½ folded, 4x5 open flat. Signed on blank side of a gift card from Jurgensen's of California. Accompanied by envelope 4x2½, Toned and lightly creased with corners worn. Multiple unknown stains through envelope. Otherwise, fine condition, addressed in his hand to "Mr. Ed Wynigear & Family". In 1955, ERNEST BORGNINE (1917-2012) proved his versatility in the film version of Paddy Chayefsky's acclaimed television play Marty. Borgnine's moving portrayal earned him an Oscar, a British Academy award, a Cannes Festival award, and an award from both the New York Film Critics and the National Board of Review. In 1962, he was cast in the role that most baby boomers best remember him for, Quentin McHale in the sitcom McHale's Navy. During the '60s and '70s, Borgnine appeared in many films including The Dirty Dozen (1966), Ice Station Zebra (1968) and The Wild Bunch (1969). Following the demise of McHale's Navy, Borgnine continued his busy career. Notable features include The Poseidon Adventure (1972) and Law and Disorder (1974). This message was addressed to ED WYNIGEAR, a Hollywood costume and wardrobe specialist active from the late 1940s to the early 1980s, and is from his personal collection. Wynigear's wardrobe work included The Day the Earth Stood Still, Cleopatra and Hello, Dolly. Jurgensen's was an upscale grocery specializing in wines and gourmet delicacies, so this message was probably attached to a holiday gift. Lightly toned with corners lightly worn. Horizontal mailing crease through center. Otherwise, fine condition.
