ERNEST BORGNINE
Small 3½x4¾ signed b/w photo of actor Ernest Borgnine in his Oscar-winning role as Marty Pilletti from Marty
Photograph signed "Ernest/Borgnine". Black ink notations in unknown hand on verso. B/w, 3½x4¾. In 1955, Borgnine (1917-2012) proved his versatility in the film version of Paddy Chayefsky's acclaimed television play, Marty. Borgnine's moving portrayal earned him an Academy Award, a British Academy Award, a Cannes Festival award, and an award from both the New York Film Critics and the National Board of Review. In 1962, he was cast in the role for which he is most remembered by baby boomers, Quentin McHale in the sitcom, McHale's Navy (ironically, Borgnine had served in the U.S. Navy for ten years before becoming an actor). During the 1960s and 1970s, Borgnine appeared in several films, including The Dirty Dozen (1966), Ice Station Zebra (1968) and The Wild Bunch (1969). Following the demise of McHale's Navy, Borgnine continued his busy career. His other notable features include The Poseidon Adventure (1972) and Law and Disorder (1974). Spongebob Squarepants fans may also recognize his voice as that of over-the-hill superhero Mermaid Man. Borgnine was married to his third wife, Ethel Merman, from June 26 to July 28, 1964.
