ERNEST DIMNET
The French priest and author discusses his upcoming trip to America with a friend in this
signed handwritten letter
Autograph letter signed: "Ernest Dimnet" in black ink. 1 page front and verso, 6x7. Written on
personal letterhead. Original envelope included. Paris, France. May 19, 1925. Addressed to
Mrs. Wainwright, in full: "I am glad you like Les Poems Bronte: You are a good judge, having
that most excellent foundation of criticism: sympathy, and as I discovered, having refined and
cultivated it through thorough reading of the best literature. I wonder if you go confused
concerning the date of my next trip. I shall be in America from Oct. 20th till Dec. 20th, and the
best time for my visit to Scranton would be November. I shall have to be in New York for my
course at 11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays but this well leave me with plenty of leeway. How
very kind of you to wish to have me two days! I should be a great liar if I pretended that I won't
like two days better than one, but this time I shall exact your promise that I shall just be one of
the family. I am retrospectively ashamed at all the trouble you took for me. A year ago you were
almost here, and in a year, I hope you and your family will be here again so that I may turn tables
a little. It will be a joy. I am sending you a London edition of "From A Paris Balcony". The
British publisher has been dragging negotiations with Houghton Mifflin for months and I am tired
of waiting. Very faithfully yours". Ernest Dimnet (1866-1954) was a French cleric, author,
and philosopher. His best known work, The Art of Thinking (1930), purportedly improves
the reader's concentration by following a few simple practices. Dimnet is also well regarded
for his popular French translations of English books written by Charlotte, Emily, and
Anne Bronte. Normal mailing folds. Slightly soiled in edges. Small ink stains but not on
signature. Toned. Corners rounded. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
