Letter written in French from the priest and philosopher reporting to Mrs. J Wainwright
on his trip to the Womens' colleges of the northeastern United States
Autograph Letter Signed: "Ernest Dimnet" in black ink. 2p, 4½x7 integral leaf. Smith College,
New York, October 22nd. Original mailing envelope included. Postmarked October 22,
1925. Neatly sliced open along top fold. Toned. Otherwise, fine condition. Letter written on
stationery containing the address "635 Park Avenue" at header. To "Dear Madam and friend". In
French, translated in part: "You think of everything. You are more than sweet./ This evening
Mt. Holyoke, tomorrow Wellesley…Too many girls!/ Yes, I will arrive at Scranton November the
18th…Madam, to my respectful sympathy". Normal mailing fold. Corners and edges gently
worn. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition. Ernest Dimnet (1866-1954) was a French
cleric, author, and philosopher. His best known work, The Art of Thinking (1930),
purportedly improves the reader's concentration by following a few simple practices. Dimnet
is also well regarded for his popular French translations of English books written by
Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte. Two items.
