ERNEST DIMNET
The French philosophy author discusses upcoming lectures in the
United States, signs name in black ink
Autograph letter signed: "Ernest Dimnet" in black ink. 1 page,
5½x6¾ folded. Written on personal letterhead. Original envelope included. New
York City, New York. November 26, no year. Addressed to Mrs. Wainwright, in
full: "Dear Mrs. Wainwright, Here I have been a week already but not
losing any time: I have travelled 600 miles and given four lectures. I am afraid
that I shall have very little tim at Scranton giving a lecture at the Plaza
Hotel the night before and perhaps sailing very shortly after the 29th. So if
you should come to New York before I go to Scranton. I wish you would kindly let
me know in advance and come here for a cup of tea. My host, Mr. R.J. Cudditry,
President of The Literary Digest Co. is a Catholic. Kindly remember me
when you have a chance, to your kind and intelligent bishop. As soon as my book,
From a Paris Balcony, just out in London, is published over here, I shall
send him a copy". Post script: "Feakins has not given me any
definite information as to the subject you have chosen for our lecture. My
preference would be for The Art of Thinking, which is not a bit austere,
but of course you should tell me your own". Ernest Dimnet (1866-1954) was
a French cleric, author and philosopher. His best known work, The Art
of Thinking (1930) invites the reader into a state of honesty where he
evaluates himself as a thoughtful human being, for humans too often only "think
of thinking" instead of actually thinking, which obstructs production of any
original thought. Dimnet is also well regarded for his books, What We Live
By (1932) and for his popular French translations of English books
written by Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte. Toned. Corners rounded. Light
surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
