ERNEST DIMNET
The French priest, best known for his philosophical book The Art
of Thinking, writes quick letter to an American colleague, planning out his
new lecture schedule
Autograph letter signed: "Ernest Dimnet" in black ink. 1 page
front and verso, 6x7. Written on personal letterhead. Paris, France. Auguest
5th, no year. Addressed to Mrs. Wainwright, in full: "The wish is so
truly father to the thought that when I send your letter planning my charming
two days at Scranton it did not occur to me to refer to my schedule. Now I find
that my lecture at Columbia takes place on Wednesday the 18th of Nov. and
consequently I cannot be in Scranton before Thursday morning. Perhaps you would
arrange for the French lecture to take place at 11 o'clock, but it would be much
better if we could get Prof. Milton J. Davies the director of the Institute of
Arts and Sciences, Columbia University.] to move his date one week onward or
backward. I am writing him. Would you write him also soon after receiving this
so that you both may be certain at once? In haste et tres a vous". Ernest
Dimnet (1866-1954) was a French cleric, author and philosopher. His best
known work, The Art of Thinking (1930) invites the reader into a
state of honesty where he evaluates himself as a thoughtful human being, for
humans too often only "think of thinking" instead of actually thinking, which
obstructs production of any original thought. Dimnet is also well regarded for
his books, What We Live By (1932) and for his popular French
translations of English books written by Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte.
