ERNEST DIMNET
A signed letter from the author and philosopher to a friend about his upcoming travels
Autograph letter signed: "Ernest Dimnet", in black ink, 3 pages (integral leaf), 5x7½. 16 rue Chanoinesse, Paris, September 21. Accompanied by original mailing envelope. To "Dear Madame". In French, translated in full: "You write the loveliest French - rare talent, rarer than well-spoken French./ I am happy that you had a good vacation in that lovely country where all my friends invite me and where I can't ever go./ For me, I was happily in my little old country house that I like because I was raised there by four women who adored me./ I hope that Professor Davies gave you a satisfactory response, for the 20th is a Friday; so, I have my class in New York in the morning, and I'm spending the night at another engagement in Waterbury, N. Y . I set sail for Rochambeau, [sic] October the10th. From the 19th onwards my address will be: Mrs. Charles D. Norton, 635 Park Avenue, New York./ Two months from today . I'm already hating my return to Scranton. Give my best to your husband. My most sympathetic sentiments,". Ernest Dimnet (1866-1954) was a French cleric, author, and philosopher. His best known work, The Art of Thinking (1930), purportedly improves the reader's concentration by following a few simple practices. Dimnet is also well regarded for his popular French translations of English books written by Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte. Normal mailing folds. Lightly toned. Slight creases. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
