Inscribed promotional photo, standing in front of a biplane
Photograph inscribed and signed: "Fair Winds to/Richard Andrews/Ernest K. Gann". B/w, 5x7 overall, image 4¼x4½ (one surface). Affixed to larger page (7¾x11) to which a small sheet (3¼x2¼) with hand addressed return address ("Gann/Friday Harbor/WA 98250") is also attached. Ernest Kellogg Gann (1910-1991) was an avid sailor and commercial pilot who turned these enthusiasms into many best-selling novels and films. Among his popular novels are The High and the Mighty (1952, made into a multi-Oscar nominated film starring John Wayne), Twilight of the Gods (1958) and Fate is the Hunter (1961). Several of his works were made into films. His screenwriting credits include the Disney film The Last Flight of Noah's Ark (1980) and the TV miniseries Masada (1981). Gann flew all sorts of airplanes, including old World War I-era biplanes. He died in Friday Harbor, near his home on San Juan Island, Washington. Photo lightly soiled. Return address page jagged at edges and rippled from glue. Large sheet frayed at left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
