"From a "Sports Illustrated" article, "And Now I Say Goodbye", October 14, 1991, about Harwell's Detroit Tigers radio farewell.In part: "Old Satch said, 'Don't look back, someone may be gaining on you.' And Mr. Shakespeare once wrote, 'To have done is to hang quite out of fashion.'...Thank you very much, and God bless all of you....'" Baseball broadcaster Harwell (1918-2010) was the voice of the Detroit Tigers from 1960 to 1991 and from 1993 to 2002. A radio broadcaster and sports announcer for over 50 years (1948-2002), Harwell was known for his dulcet voice liberally sprinkled with Southern expressions from his home state of Georgia. He began his career in 1943 announcing games for the minor league Atlanta Crackers before serving four years in the Marines. Harwell's first major league jobs were for the Brooklyn Dodgers (1948-1949), the New York Giants (1950-1953) and the Baltimore Orioles (1954-1959); he also spent 1992 with the California Angels. Harwell was inducted into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame in 1989 and was awarded the Ford C. Frick Award, awarded to broadcasters for their contributions to baseball, by the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981. Lightly toned and creased, otherwise in fine condition.
