ERNST TOCH
The avant-garde composer is shown with cigarette in hand.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To William Vandercage/with
highest esteem/for his art/Ernst Toch/sept'48" B/w, 8x10. Viennese
composer Ernst Toch (1887-1964) was a concert pianist who found even greater
success as an avant-garde composer in a variety of genres. He fled to
France, Britain and ultimately the US when the Nazis took power. Toch composed
symphonies, choral works and film scores, his best known sound track
being the chase scene from Shirley Temple's Heidi (1937). His Third
Symphony won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1956. Toch also wrote two music
theory tomes. Signature light and in poor contrast (not legible head on). Toned.
Corners lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
