signature, dated in 1936
Autograph Musical Quotation Signed: "Ernst von Dohnanyi/London/13th Feb. 1936", 5¾x3¼.
Above his signature, the "Grand Old Man of Hungarian Music" has drawn three bars of
music. At the time he signed this autograph, Ernst von Dohnanyi (1877-1960) was Director
of the Budapest Academy, where he headed the master classes in piano and composition. As a
teacher, Dohnanyi became accomplished in all musical genres, and his operatic masterpiece,
Der Tenor (1920-1927), was one of the first true comic operas of the 20th century. In the
years before this London visit, Dohnanyi composed Essential Finger Exercises(1929),Symphonic Minutes(1933) and Sextet (1935). The German occupation finally drove the
maestro from his home in 1944. Dohnanyi ultimately settled in the U.S., where he was a
pianist and composer-in-residence of Florida State University beginning in September
1949. His first year in America, Dohnanyi composed his Violin Concerto No. 2 (1949-1950).
