Signature: "Erskine Caldwell", 7½x2½ Affixed to 8½x11 page with typed caption and magazine photo Caldwell with his wife, swimming in a lake. The writer of 25 novels, 150 short stories and 12 non-fiction books, Erskine Caldwell (1903-1987) is best known for his depictions of poverty stricken blacks and whites in the South. His 1932 novel Tobacco Road (1932) became a long-running Broadway play and God's Little Acre (1933) sold over 14 million copies; both were made into feature films. In all, the prolific author sold some 80 million copies of his works in 43 languages! The photo affixed to this card appeared in Life magazine in 1945. It shows the author in a Lake at Agua Caliente, Arizona. The woman on the dock is June Johnson, the third of his four wives, whom he married in 1942. His second wife was famed photographer Margaret Bourke-White. From the private collection of Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II, went on to become President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
