Signature: "Erskine Caldwell", 7½x2½ Affixed to 8½x11 page with typed caption and
magazine photo Caldwell with his wife, swimming in a lake. The writer of 25 novels, 150
short stories and 12 non-fiction books, Erskine Caldwell (1903-1987) is best known for
his depictions of poverty stricken blacks and whites in the South. His 1932 novel Tobacco
Road (1932) became a long-running Broadway play and God's Little Acre (1933) sold over
14 million copies; both were made into feature films. In all, the prolific author sold some 80
million copies of his works in 43 languages! The photo affixed to this card appeared in Life
magazine in 1945. It shows the author in a Lake at Agua Caliente, Arizona. The woman on
the dock is June Johnson, the third of his four wives, whom he married in 1942. His second
wife was famed photographer Margaret Bourke-White. From the private collection of Ralph
Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the
China-Burma-India Theater of World War II, went on to become President and CEO of
Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product
