postmarked Washington, DC, May 1, 1981, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Erwin Neher
and his research partner, Bert Sakmann, of the Max-Planck Institute in Germany
won the 1991 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for their discoveries
concerning the function of single ion channels in cells." The research team has
also received a number of other prestigious awards, including the K.C. Cole
Award of the Biophysical Society (1982), the Spencer Award from
Columbia University (1983), the Gairdner Award (Toronto, 1989), the
Bristol-Myers Squibb Research Award (New York, 1990) and the Gerard
Prize from the American Neuroscience Association (1991). Slightly rippled.
