ESTELLE TAYLOR
Estelle Taylor sends her new address and phone number to a friend.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Estelle", 1¼p, 5¾x4 card. No place, No date. To Lillian. In full: "I wondered about you -- Hope you are not having any trouble with picture. I wish I were out there with you. I have moved to 330 West 72nd st -- phone 2-1486 End. Give my love to my friends. Let me know as soon as you return. Love to you." Exotically beautiful, Estelle Taylor (1899-1958) began her show business career as a Broadway chorus dancer before debuting in films (While New York Sleeps, 1920). She appeared in the silents The Ten Commandments (as Miriam, 1923) and gave a wry performance of Lucrezia Borgia in 1926's Don Juan before moving easily to "talkies". Taylor starred in such feature films as Cimarron (1931) and Call Her Savage (1932) before retiring in the 1930s. The actress, who also made news as the wife (1925-1931) of boxing champ Jack Dempsey, made her last film appearance in 1945 in The Southerner. It is possible that this letter was written to "The First Lady of the Silent Screen", Lillian Gish. While Taylor and Gish never worked in a film together, both were closely associated with Mary Pickford. Taylor had starred in the Pickford vehicle Dorothy Vernon of Haddon Hall (1925), and Pickford had brought Lillian and her sister, Dorothy, to the attention of D.W. Griffith, who added them to his company of actors at his Biograph Studios. Lightly soiled. Stray ink marks touch 3 words of writing. Overall, fine condition.
