ETHEL MERMAN
Youthful image in an elegant gown, inscribed in person to collector Saul Goodman
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To/Saul/Sincerely/Ethel Merman". B/w, 8x10. Collector's ink stamp on verso dates signature: March 18, 1936. Possessing one of the richest, most powerful voices in the history of theater, Ethel Merman (1908-1984), the "First Lady" of American musical comedy strutted her way across the stage during five decades of show-business success, beginning with her breakout in 1930's Girl Crazy and continuing on to memorable parts in Anything Goes, Annie Get Your Gun and Gypsy. "I Got Rhythm" from Girl Crazy and "There's No Business Like Show Business" from Annie Get Your Gun became her trademark songs. Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Small tear to right edge. Scattered creases and surface marks, one touching inscription. Otherwise, fine condition.
