ETHEL MERMAN
She pictured here in a still from the 1953 film Call Me Madame
Inscribed Photograph Signed: "To Robin/Best Wishes/Ethel Merman." B/w 8x10. ETHEL MERMAN, the undisputed queen of musical comedy, is pictured here in the 1953 film Call Me Madame, in which she reprises her Broadway role as Mrs. Sally Adams, a society hostess who is named Ambassador to the mythological kingdom of Lichtenburg. The film, based on Irving Berlin's successful 1950 Broadway hit, showcases Merman's powerful singing voice and vivacious personality, as she falls in love with and marries the country's foreign minister, portrayed by George Sanders, who is also pictured. Merman made her Broadway debut in 1930 in Girl Crazy, a Gershwin musical, and in 1934 starred in Anything Goes, which was also made into a film in which she starred two years later. Other Broadway successes include Annie Get Your Gun (1946) and Gypsy (1959), and she is known for her many film roles, including Stage Door Canteen (1943) and There's No Business Like Show Business (1954). Nick at top blank edge. Fine condition.
