Autograph Note signed: "To/Louise/In His Name/Ethel Waters",
4x5¾ album leaf. Blues singer Ethel Waters (1896-1977), who was known as "Sweet
Mama Stringbean", performed in Philadelphia before appearing at the Lincoln
Theatre in Harlem (1917) and performing at the Cotton Club in the 1920s.
She was also one of the most prominent Black stage and screen stars of
the 1930s and 1940s. In 1949, Waters was nominated for an Academy Award
for her performance as Granny Dysey Johnson, the worldly wise grandmother of
Patricia "Pinky" Johnson, a light-skinned Black woman struggling with her
identity, in Pinky (1949). Waters also played the title role in
Beulah, the first television dramatic series to star a Black
performer (1950-1952). Slightly creased, touching writing. Ink smudged at
the "e" in Ethel. Lightly soiled, stained at blank areas. File holes at upper
blank margin. Overall, fine condition.
