ETHEL WATTS MUMFORD
Four-page handwritten letter, with the rare signature of her name from her second marriage, Ethel Watts Grant
Autograph Letter signed: "Ethel Watts Grant", 4 pages (integral leaf), 5¼x6½. Halifax Hotel, Halifax, Nova Scotia, no date. To "My Dear Mr. Leone [?], in full: "Your letter chased me all over the Vail de Chaleur and up a Salween river at Gauchois, and on apace to Montreal and caught up with me here. Hence delay in answering. I'm afraid it's too late to give you Mary's address for by this time you have found her or you have not. If she's not in Provincetown by now her address will be 20 Charles St., New York. Didn't get the note you speak of before & even what you say I suppose you sent it to the theatre, where mail seems to be a D. L. O. department. Anyway I didn't get it. But thank you just the same. I've signed in London for the play & I suppose it will go on there sometime next winter, but the theatrical situation is at present most troubled and uncertain. Give my best to the Mrs., and do hunt me up when you are in town this winter. Cordially". "Ethel Watts Mumford (1876-1940) published her first novel, Dupes, in 1901. Although she divorced her first husband, George Mumford, that same year because he objected to her writing, she continued to use the name of Mumford in her professional career. Only rarely did she employ Ethel Watts Grant or Ethel Watts Mumford Grant, following her marriage to Peter Geddes Grant in 1906. She wrote several light comedies, performed on Broadway and West End stages, and with Addison Mizner and Oliver Herford, created an annual series (1903-1910) known as The Cynics Calendar. A typical Ethel Watts Mumford quote is, "Knowledge is power, if you know it about the right person." Normal mailing fold. Toned. Corners lightly worn. Lightly soiled on folds. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
