EUGENE FIELD
The closing lines of his humorous poem, "Casey's Table
d'Hôte".
Autograph Quotation signed: "Eugene
Field./Feby. 22, 1893.", 1p, 4x6. On stationery from "466 Fullerton
Avenue." In full: "'Whenever I've this heartache or this feelin'
in my throat,/I lay it all to the thinkin' of Casey's tabble dote.'" Field
is best known for his poetry for children such as "Little Boy Blue" (1892),
"Wynken, Blynken, and Nod" (1892) and "The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat"
(1894). These lines conclude the lyrical poem about Irishman Casey, who
drifted to Red Hoss Mountain, where he "opened up a caffy 'nd he run a tabble
dote." It appeared in Field's A Little Book of Western Verse (1889), and
begins: "Oh, them days on Red Hoss Mountain, when the skies wuz fair 'nd
blue,/When the money flowed like likker, 'nd the folks was brave 'nd true!/When
the nights waz crisp 'nd balmy, 'nd the camp wuz all astir/With the joints all
throwed wide open 'nd no sheriff to demur!". Written in his characteristic
tiny script. Mounting remnants on corners of verso of integral leaf (no show
through). Fine condition.
