EUGENE HALE (1836-1918) was a Republican U.S. congressman from Maine's 5th Congressional District (1869-1879) and U.S. Senator from Maine (1881-1911), as well as a member of Maine's State House of Representatives (1867-1868 and 1879-1880). The chairman of several U.S. Senate committees, Hale is probably best remembered for helping to expand and modernize the U.S. Navy. President Rutherford B. ROBERT SAFFORD HALE (1822-1881) was a New York State court judge (1856-1864) before being elected a Republican U.S. congressman from New York (16th District, 1866-1867; 17th District, 1873-1875).
