Eugene Hale, U. S. Representative and Senator from Maine, wrote this letter to a friend to thank him for books and to pass on his traveling schedule.
Autograph letter signed "Eugene Hale". Black ink and lead pencil notations in top right corner of page 1. 3 pages, 4¾x7¾, 1 sheet folded, front and verso, binder holes at top edge. 4¾x1¼ typed bio affixed to page 3. Ellsworth, Maine, dated "14h Aug". Addressed to B. B. Thatcher, Esq. In full: "My dear Sir I have just got home from Lincoln county &find your letter here. Since the books along with the bill accompanying - I shall have the leisure this year till after the election in which I have a pretty [illegible] you know - I go to [illegible] on Monday & shall [illegible] the Kanzas [sic] [illegible] when I shall be glad to see you if you can come & see me there Sincerely Yours". Hale (1836-1918) was a Republican U. S. Representative from Maine's 5th Congressional District (1869-1879) and U. S. Senator from Maine (1881-1911), as well as a member of Maine's state house of representatives (1867-1868 and 1879-1880). The chairman of several U. S. Senate committees, Hale is probably best remembered for helping to expand and modernize the U. S. Navy. President Rutherford B. Hayes even offered him the post of Secretary of the Navy, a post that he declined. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Body of letter, but not signature, is lightly smeared but legible. Adhesive residue, show-through and discoloration along spine of letter and binder holes touch body of letter but not signature. Pin holes in page 3 touch body of letter but not signature. Paper loss in top left corner of page 3 (does not touch signature or body of letter). Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
