EUGENE HALE
Eugene Hale signed this letter, typed on U. S. Senate stationery in 1906, to turn down the recipient's request for a senate document. Hale was U. S. Representative and Senator from Maine.
Typed letter signed "Eugene Hale .". 1 page, 8x6, on U. S. Senate stationery. Jan. 5, 1906. Addressed to Mr. John O. Winship. In full: "Your letter of Jan. 2d has been received. There was a very limited edition of the Senate Document #234, which you request, only two for each Senator, and my supply is exhausted. I regret that I am unable to comply with your request, Very truly yours,". Hale (1836-1918) was a Republican U. S. Representative from Maine's 5th Congressional District (1869-1879) and U. S. Senator from Maine (1881-1911), as well as a member of Maine's state house of representatives (1867-1868 and 1879-1880). The chairman of several U. S. Senate committees, Hale is probably best remembered for helping to expand and modernize the U. S. Navy. President Rutherford B. Hayes even offered him the post of Secretary of the Navy, a post that he declined. Lightly toned and creased. Adhesive residue in left, right and bottom edge and all four corners, and show-through from adhesive and tape residue on verso (do not touch signature). Irregular bottom edge. Lightly soiled on verso (no show-through). Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
