EUGENE McCARTHY
7x9 color photo taken by famed portrait photographer Fabian Bachrach,
inscribed and signed by McCarthy on the 10x13 mount. B/w,7¼x9¼
image, 10x13¼ overall (two surfaces). Photo was taken by Fabian Bachrach
(1917-2010), renowned for his portrait photos of Presidents and other public
figures. Corners creased on mount. Otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by
Bachrach presentation folder (11x13½). Right edge frayed. Lightly toned and
creased. Otherwise fine condition. Eugene Joseph McCarthy (1916-2005), a U.S.
Senator from Minnesota from 1959-1971, later sought the Democratic
nomination for President in 1968, running as an anti-Vietnam War candidate.
His defeat of President Johnson in the March New Hampshire primary led to New
York Senator Robert Kennedy's candidacy and Johnson's decision not to seek
reelection on March 31st. McCarthy remained in the race as a serious
contender, but damaged his chances with several gaffes, including the claim that
Robert Kennedy's supporters were less intelligent than his own. At the
Democratic National Convention held in Chicago, August 26-29, 1968, incumbent
Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey won the presidential nomination on the first
ballot with 1,761¾ votes to McCarthy's 601 and South Dakota Senator George
McGovern's 67½. McCarthy ran quixotic campaigns for President through 1988, and
endorsed candidate as diverse as Ronald Reagan (1980) and Ralph Nader (2000).
