EUGENE LABICHE
The French comic playwright signs his name in black ink
Autograph sentiment signed: "vivre honnetement/ afin de vire gaiment/ Eugene Labiche" in black ink. Translated: "Live honestly to live gaily". 4¼x2¼ card affixed to 5x3 index card. Eugene Labiche (1815-1888)was a French comic playwright, who wrote some of the most popular and amusing light comedies of the nineteenth-century French stage. Born to the bourgeois class that would provide the social setting for most of his works, Labiche went to school to become a lawyer, but went on to work as a journalist for a while before turning to fiction. He first wrote a novel titled La Clef des champs (1838) (The Key to the Fields), and he would go on to write his first play (in collaboration with March Michel) titled Monsieur de Coislin (1838) which was met with great success. Labiche would go on to write light comedies such as Le Chapeau de paille d'italie (1851) (The Italian Straw Hat), Le Misanthrope et l'Auvergnat (1852), Le Voyage de M. Perrichon (1860), La Pudre aux yeux (1861). Toned. Corners rounded. Pencil notes in bottom margin. Creased throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
