EUNICE BEECHER (MRS. HENRY WARD BEECHER)
Signing as Eunice White Beecher
Signature: "Eunice White Beecher/Aug. 25th", 3¾x1½. Eunice Bullard White (Beecher), 1812-1897, married abolitionist Pastor Henry Ward Beecher, brother of Harriet Stowe Beecher, author of Uncle Tom's Cabin. After an unhappy decade in rural Indiana, the Beecher's and surviving children moved back to Brooklyn in 1847. In 1859, she authored the semi-autobiographical From Dawn to Daylight, which painted such a negative view of Indiana. In 1870 Henry Ward Beecher, now an American religious superstar, was accused of adultery by Elizabeth Tilton, accusations that she later recanted. Eunice stayed loyal to her husband throughout the resulting scandal, which lasted a total of seven years. Slightly toned. Lightly creased. Lightly frayed at bottom edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
