Fragment of an undated typed letter, signed by U. S. Representative
and Confederate officer Eustace Gibson
Fragment signed "E Gibson". Pencil notations at right edge and
black ink notations on verso, both in unknown hand. 1 page, 5½x1¾. Closing from
an undated typed letter addressed to N. C. Wyeth, Esq. of Chadds-Ford,
Pennsylvania. Gibson (1842-1900) was a Representative from West
Virginia's 4th Congressional District (1883-1887), as well as a delegate to
the Virginia State Constitutional Convention (1867-1868). He fought with the
Confederate States Army during the American Civil War, joining as a first
lieutenant in 1861 and being promoted to captain in 1863 before being forced to
retire as a result of battlefield wounds. Lightly toned, stained, foxed and
creased. Show-through from mounting remnant on verso touches signature. Top edge
is lightly dented. Folded once vertically and horizontally. Otherwise in fine
condition.
