EVA MARIE SAINT and JEFFREY HAYDEN
Letter penned by Hayden, also signed by Saint, describing the couple's vacation in Spain
Autograph Letter signed: "Jeff", "+ Eva Marie", 1 page, 6x4. Catalonia, Spain, 1999 September 21. On Lufthansa post card bearing Spanish postage to Mr./Mrs. B[arnaby] & M[ary] Conrad, Carpenteria, California. Handwritten by Hayden, with Saint adding her signature. In full: "You were right, Barney, a 'one-night' city. It's beautiful, all those trees and wide avenues & lovely people, and the Picasso Museum fantastic (the early work exquisite) but Gaudi is pretty gaudy and not to our taste. On to San Sebastian tonight, then south of France. Life is good! Regards". Pencil note (unknown hand): Eva Marie Saint. Actress EVA MARIE SAINT (b. 1924) won the Drama Desk Award for her first stage appearance, 1953's A Trip to Bountiful. She followed up with an 1954 Oscar win for her co-starring stint with Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront. The following year, the blonde, graceful actress appeared with Paul Newman in a TV musical version of Our Town. A string of mediocre films in the 1970s prompted Saint to seek out more satisfying roles on television before returning to the stage in 1983. More recently, Saint won an Emmy for her performance in the 1989 dramatic special People Like Us. Saint has been married since 1951 to TV director JEFFREY HAYDEN (b. 1926). Hayden directed one feature film (Vintage, 1957), and was active in television work from the 1950s through the 1980s, directing multiple episodes of such series as Batman, The Andy Griffith Show, Falcon Crest, Knight Rider, Magnum, P. I. and In the Heat of the Night. In the 1990s he devoted himself to TV documentaries. Author Barnaby Conrad has written about Spain, including his experiences as a bullfighter. He and wife Mary Conrad created and ran the Santa Barbara Writers Workshop for over 30 years, beginning in 1973. Lightly worn at corners. Corners creased. Pencil note (unknown hand) at lower edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
