EVA TURNER
TLS discussing opera photos
Typed Letter signed: "Eva Turner", 1 page, 8½x10. London,
1988 June 21. On personal letterhead to Michael Bavar, in full:
"Following our telephone conversation about the mode of the signature on
the Aida photograph, I am writing to tell you that it has already been posted
back to you. I must say I was very impressed by the quality of the photographs,
and also happy to learn that the two portraits of 'Turndot' and 'Brünnhilde'
have been such a success. That was certainly news for me to learn that you and
Richard Bonynge are collaborating on a book in tribute to the great divas -
wonderful. With my warmest regards and all blessings". English dramatic
soprano Eva Turner (1892-1990) was best known for her Italian and
German opera roles, especially the title role in Puccini's Turandot
(mentioned in this letter). Originally a chorister with the Carl Rosa Opera
Company, Turner earned increasingly important roles, and made her debut at
Milan's La Scala in 1924. Two years later, she was the first to perform
Turandot at Covent Garden. Turner, who retired from the stage in 1948 to
become an influential teacher, was honored with a DBE in 1962. Multiple
mailing folds. Fine condition.
