EVAN HAYWOOD ANTONE, CARL HERTZOG and ROBERT M YOUNG
Antone's limited edition history of the First Presbyterian Church of El Paso, signed by the author, by the pastor, and by famed book printer Hertzog
Book signed: "Robert M Young", "Evan H. Antone", "Carl Hertzog", 89 pages, 7x10½. From Strength to Strength: a Centennial History of First Presbyterian Church of El Paso, 1882-1982, by Evan Haywood Antone. El Paso: First Presbyterian Church, 1982. First edition, No. 896 of a limited edition of 1,000. Original binding of the famed publisher. EVAN HAYWOOD ANTONE (1922-2009) was a professor of English at the University of Texas/El Paso, active in this church and in the El Paso Historical Society. Acclaimed printer CARL HERTZOG printed his first book in El Paso in 1923. Even in this early work his artistry was evident: careful selection of font, paper, binding and every element to please esthetically while fitting the theme of the book. In 1948, he began to teach book publishing at what is now the University of Texas/El Paso, guided a class through the production of The Spanish Heritage of the Southwest (1952), and founded Texas University Publishing. He collaborated frequently with Texas author Tom Lea. The Carl Hertzog Award is bestowed annually for excellence in book design. Dr. ROBERT M. YOUNG, formerly of San Francisco, became pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in El Paso in 1978. Vermin nibbling to spine. Fine condition.
