EVEL KNIEVEL
Large 10x13 photograph of Knievel in his very patriotic costume, signed along the collar
Photograph signed: "Evel Knievel". Color, 10x13. Robert Craig Knievel (1938-2007) was nicknamed "Evil" by a jail guard, a name he later changed to "Evel" to avoid offending religious persons. Reputedly a bank robber and safe-cracker in his youth, Knievel began daredevil stunts in 1965 to call attention to his motorcycle dealership. In 1973 he leaped 50 cars, stacked four deep, at the L.A. Coliseum. However, many of his stunts were unsuccessful, attracting fans anticipating a big smashup. Spectacular failures included an attempted leap of 150' over a fountain at Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas (1968), and a rocket and parachute-assisted leap at the Snake River, Idaho (1974). Even after retirement, he retained his penchant for bone breaking spills, falling from a golf cart and then a Jacuzzi. Ironically, Knievel's daredevil jumps almost killed him indirectly. He required a liver transplant (1999) to replace an organ ravaged by Hepatitis C, acquired from tainted blood received in one of his many surgeries His son, Robbie, carries on the family's daredevil tradition. Minor surface smudges and creases (not evident head on), minor crease at forehead. Fine condition.
